Biography

Laura Brugel was born on February 20, 1992 into a very musically talented family, in the Netherlands. Laura discovered the trumpet at the age of 14, and immediately she fell in love with it. This love led to hard work and passion, intensifying when she started at the Mytylschool Eindhoven. 

In 2007-2008 Laura studied at the Young Talent Class of the Rick Institution of Music. She got trumpet lessons from Lou Feijten and piano/theory from Maartje Pinckears. From 2008-2012 she studied at the Regional Young Talent, Conservatory of Tilburg with Radko Berka. Studying with Radko led to an honourable mention at the 2009 Princes Christina Concours. After that she went to Estonia with Bert Langeler, where she played several of solos.

Laura has worked with the piano virtuoso Jan Vayne several times. This collaboration was for the Scholierentour 2010 & 2011. The scholierentour is a special occasion organized by the Cardo Foundation to increase participation and integration for young people with disabilities. The goal was: "Together music, limited or not"

Since May 2010, Laura has been working as a conductor in the youth fanfare of St. Jozef in Someren-Heide.

In 2011, Laura participated in the trumpet workshop of the Oberlin Conservatory in Ohio. Here she received lessons from Roy Poper, Arto Hoornweg, Michael Davis and Joel Brennan. The workshop consisted 10 days filled with master classes, private lessons, performance classes and recitals. During the workshop in Oberlin, Laura became acquainted with Joel Brennan. He invited her to come to Canada to follow classes at his trumpet class. In November 2011 Laura flew to Canada to attend 2 months of lessons at the Brandon University in Manitoba. While she was in Canada, she also received lessons from Miles Newman, Principal Trompet Regina Orchestra. Currently Laura has a lot of contact with the students, Joel Brennan and the director: Prof. M. Kim.

In March 2012 Laura was accepted as principal trumpeter at the Groot Entre Orchestra project of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. Together with 80 young selected musicians she played a successful concert in April in the Concertgebouw. Conducted by Ivan Meylemans.

September 2013, Laura was admitted to the pre-education of the Royal Conservatory of The Hague. She studied at Ad van Zon and Gertjan Loot. During this study, Laura played many solos, including at the: Organization Prohibition Chemical Weapons, the Red Cross Gala, International Olympic Comity and the Ministry of Economic Affairs. Because Laura had to rehabilitate, she decided to continue her trumpet studie at the Brabant Conservatory. Here she recieved classes from Steven Bossuyt, Martijn de Laat and Jacq Sanders.

Due to her illness, Laura had to decide to switch her education and she has started a social work program. Currently she is in her third year, with a minor in mental healthcare. Next to her study she is a member of the ITK Fontys board. 

Despite her illness, Laura wants to commit herself to young disabled people in the future to motivate them, because no dream should be too big. Laura herself has several chronic diseases and she has followed special education in the past.
